John Parente

John Parente received a B.S. in Music Education and his M.S. in Education from Indiana University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954, playing in the Army band in Germany. From 1956-1959 he was the music director and 5th grade teacher at Polk Township in Marshall, IN. In 1959 he moved to West Lafayette to become a classroom teacher at Morton Elementary. In 1965 he became the first principal of Cumberland Elementary, where he continued as principal until 1985. He was chosen as Indiana Elementary Principal of the Year in 1981 and also received the Sagamore of the Wabash from the Governor of Indiana and the Treasured Citizen of West Lafayette from Mayor Margerum. During the reorganization of the elementary schools, he was named the principal of Happy Hollow Elementary where he remained until his retirement in 1993. He guided the careers of many classroom teachers and touched the lives of thousands of elementary students.
