Wall of Pride Convocation

April 8, 2021 - April 9, 2021

The Wall of Pride honors celebrated alumni whose actions or achievements in their chosen fields bring admiration and distinction to the heritage of West Lafayette High School. Members are nominated by other alumni, parents, current West Lafayette students, faculty, staff, administrators, and citizens from our community. In the fall of every other year, nominees are reviewed and members are selected by a committee comprised of West Lafayette High School administrators, former alumni, and members of the West Lafayette Schools Education Foundation.

 

The 2020 Wall of Pride events have been postponed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The events will be held April 8th & 9th, 2021 with further information forthcoming.

Double Your Dollars LIVE! Virtual Event

Due to the pandemic, we were forced to cancel our Scarlet & Gray event for 2020. But we still need your support to continue our mission to provide the West Lafayette community with premiere public education. Our Scarlet & Gray event raises money for the Foundation to continue great programs like Teacher Grants, Wall of Pride, The Backpack Program, scholarships and other needs that arise during the school year. We invite you to help us by watching our Double Your Dollars LIVE! Virtual Event on Thursday, June 25th, 2020 at 7 p.m. from the comfort of your own home.

Watch as some of your favorite teachers play games and have fun, while we ask you to help raise money for our Foundation. Double Your Dollars will do just that- give you the opportunity to donate and watch as matching donors double your donations to the Foundation. This telethon/game show style event will be fun and interactive and we cannot wait to share it with you.

Our host will be WL alumna- Kelly Russell!

Teacher Trot Virtual 5K

Help raise money for WLSEF Teacher Grant Program! All proceeds will benefit the Teacher Grant program for WL teachers. This year, two grant cycles will be held with grants awarded once in the fall semester of 2020 and once in the spring of 2021.

Registration is LIVE! 2022 Scarlet & Gray Dinner and Auction

Registration is now open for the 2022 Scarlet & Gray Dinner and Auction. An important component to ensuring the success of our students, faculty, staff and families of our West Lafayette Community Schools is the annual West Lafayette Schools Education Foundation (WLSEF) Scarlet and Gray Dinner and Auction. This event, formerly known as West Side Story, is the largest fundraiser of the year to sustain and grow support for the enhancement of our school community. It will be held in the Shively Club at Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturday evening, March 26, 2022.

Even though we have been unable to host this event the last two years, the WLSEF continued its programs …

  • Over $7,000 awarded annually for teacher grants;
  • Twenty-six annual scholarships awarded to graduating seniors;
  • Support for 40 + families through the Backpack Program, including holiday and school breaks and throughout the pandemic;
  • Support for initiatives coordinated by student clubs and organizations.

We are thrilled to bring back this event with a new name, in a new venue, and with new excitement. In our mission to support our schools, we are seeking businesses to sponsor the Scarlet and Gray event. This year’s benefits for being a sponsor include:

Distinguished West Lafayette Alumni to Return for Wall of Pride Celebration

Wall of PrideThe West Lafayette Schools Education Foundation and the West Lafayette Alumni Association are pleased to announce the fourth Wall of Pride class. Originally announced as the 2020 Wall of Pride class, their recognition was delayed due to the pandemic. Six distinguished alumni and one educator will be recognized for career accomplishments on Thursday and Friday, April 7-8, 2022.

The 2022 Wall of Pride class includes:

  • Moungi Bawendi ’78, Lester Wolfe Professor of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
  • Ingrid Eagly ’87, Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law and Faculty Director of the Criminal Justice Program.
  • Vanessa Gedney ’96, Segment Producer for Real Time with Bill Maher/HBO.
  • Danny Johnson ’80, Tony Award winning actor.
  • Chris Parente ’89, seven-time award winning reporter and co-anchor of Daybreak, Denver, Colorado’s FOX affiliate.
  • Robert ‘Bob’ Williamson ’64, retired, owner and ophthalmologist, Williamson Eye Institute.
  • Gordon Straley, former West Lafayette teacher and coach, awarded posthumously.

The inductees will be introduced to students at a convocation on Friday, April 8 at 1:45 p.m. in the West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School auditorium. Alumni will also visit select classes. The Wall of Pride ceremony, though delayed by the pandemic, will become an annual ceremony moving forward.

Brad Cohen, chairperson for the West Lafayette Alumni Relations committee, says that celebrating prominent alumni reflects favorably on the education offered by West Lafayette schools. “The Wall of Pride inductees are an inspiration for today’s students and a point of pride for alumni and our community. It is fitting that we recognize their outstanding accomplishments.”

2022 Homecoming Tailgate

September 9

The West Lafayette Alumni Association is planning a Homecoming Tailgate for all alumni on Friday evening, September 9, 2022. West Side will take on Lafayette Central Catholic at Straley Field in one of Tippecanoe County's biggest football rivalries. Plan now to gather at the Cumberland Park Picnic Shelter to reconnect with fellow alumni. More details to come this summer.

2023 Wall of Pride Dates Announced

April 13, 2023 - April 14, 2023

The West Lafayette Schools Education Foundation and the West Lafayette Alumni Association are pleased to announce the fifth Wall of Pride class. Five distinguished alumni and one educator will be recognized for career accomplishments on Thursday and Friday, April 13-14, 2023. The 2023 Wall of Pride class includes:

  • Sonia Angell ’83 – public health leader, Professor of the Practice, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and assistant clinical professor of medicine at Columbia University;
  • John Dennis ’77 – West Lafayette, Indiana mayor;
  • David Kelso ’63 – clinical professor of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University;
  • Gary Lehman ’70 – retired chairman of the board of Oerlikon Fairfield and local civic leader;
  • Chris Ho ’84 – Founder, and CEO of Drug Design Methodologies, Senior Research Fellow at Qubit Pharmaceuticals;
  • Joseph Krause, Educator – Social Studies teacher at WLHS from 1961-1999.

The inductees will be introduced to students at a convocation on Friday, April 14 at West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School. Alumni will also visit select classes. The Wall of Pride ceremony is an annual event.

Dan Walbaum, associate principal at West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School shares, “The Wall of Pride was established for the purpose of celebrating our alumni and our schools. It really is a highlight of the school year for our students and teachers. It is our hope that the Wall of Pride inductees will be an inspiration for generations of the West Lafayette High School community – past, present, and future.”
